The synchrotron machine generates extremely bright X- ray light that, when shone upon the samples, generates a signal revealing the chemistry of the sulfur. The presence of sulfide minerals indicates where the microbes began making use of sulfur alongside carbon to power their biochemical machinery. The question was whether the switch to sulfur influenced the carbon sources the microbes ate or left behind. To find out, the researchers relied on unique instrumentation and collaborations within the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington. With the aid of a very strong magnet, an instrument called a mass spectrometer at the lab characterized the water- soluble organic material. The tests found that, in contrast to the layers where oxygen was available, leftover carbon compounds in the sediment samples where sulfur had been used for respiration were mostly of the sort that requires more energy to degrade than would be liberated through the degradation itself. Now let’s get down to exactly how to do it. It can push and pull horizontally, push and pull vertically, flex at the elbow, and extend at the elbow. That means a proper upper body workout routine can contain (up to) 6 different exercises that target 6 different movement patterns and/or muscle groups. Here’s what I mean: Horizontal Push: A horizontal pushing exercise is any weight training exercise that involves moving a weight out in front of you so that it’s traveling away from your torso horizontally. For example, most chest exercises (like the bench press) fit into this category. ![]() ![]() Horizontal Pull: A horizontal pulling exercise is any weight training exercise that involves moving a weight in towards your torso horizontally from straight out in front of you. For example, most back rowing exercises (like bent over barbell/dumbbell rows) fit into this category. Vertical Push: A vertical pushing exercise is any weight training exercise that involves moving a weight up vertically in relation to your torso so that it goes straight over head (or at least in that direction). For example, most shoulder exercises (like the overhead press) fit into this category. Vertical Pull: A vertical pulling exercise is any weight training exercise that involves moving a weight down vertically in relation to your torso so that you’re pulling down from over head. For example, most back pulling exercises (like pull- ups/lat pull- downs) fit into this category. Elbow Flexion: An elbow flexion exercise is any weight training exercise that involves moving a weight towards you by flexing at the elbow. For example, most biceps curling exercises (like barbell/dumbbell curls) fit into this category. Elbow Extension: An elbow extension exercise is any weight training exercise that involves moving a weight away from you by extending at the elbow. For example, most triceps extension exercises (like cable press downs/laying barbell extensions) fit into this category. When putting together an upper body workout routine, your goal in most cases is to select exercises that will allow you train all of those movement patterns to some degree. Now this obviously isn’t the super mega definitive list of exercises you can choose for an upper body workout routine, but it is some examples of the most popular and effective ones. In most cases, the next step is to select one exercise from each category/movement pattern shown above. While that isn’t an absolute rule, it is the way it should be done in most cases. Doing so causes a few important things to happen. First, it guarantees each movement pattern and muscle group gets trained, which is the #1 goal of the typical upper body workout routine. Second, it keeps the workout a sane length and avoids unnecessary (and possibly counterproductive) excess exercises from being added. Third, it ensures there will be proper balance around the joints (elbow and shoulder). What I mean is, for every horizontal push, there should be a horizontal pull (and vice- versa).
![]() For every vertical push, there should be a vertical pull (and vice- versa). For every elbow flexion, there should be an elbow extension (and vice- versa). When this type of balance DOESN’T take place, it’s a recipe for disaster in terms of injury potential. Selecting upper body exercises in this manner greatly lessens that potential. Exercise Order. Now that your weight training exercises have been selected, it’s time to put them in order. Again, this depends on a lot of individual factors, but in general, these are the basic rules of exercise order: So, the first thing virtually EVERYONE can do is take your biceps and triceps exercises (flexion/extension) and put them at the very end of your upper body workout. Regardless of goals/preferences, that’s where they belong. Beyond that, it gets a little trickier and depends more on you than absolute rules in my opinion. So, I figure the best thing I can do at this point is throw out some sample upper body workouts for you to learn from or just use as is. Whatever the case, you presume there’s no Guinness in your future tonight. Now you really need something. What’s a Primal type to do when it comes to a simple social drink? Indeed, there are some legitimate scientific reasons to enjoy alcohol in moderation. Alcohol as a blood thinner enhances vascular health, and the phenolic content (potent antioxidants) can pack a healthy punch. Research has compared alcohol abstention with moderate and “heavy” drinking. Moderate alcohol consumption appears (PDF) to lower the incidence of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, total and ischaemic stroke, as well as result in an overall reduction in mortality. And it seems older folks have the most to gain. Not only do they appear to benefit the most from a vascular health standpoint, research has linked moderate drinking in those over 6. It has also been linked to higher bone density in postmenopausal women. Not everyone does, and there’s nothing wrong with that. With that said. Alcohol isn’t metabolized as a carbohydrate product, and it doesn’t send your blood sugar shooting upward. As long as you aren’t looking to lose weight, a modest drink here or there shouldn’t make much of a difference. If you’re looking to lose weight, however, we’d suggest avoiding alcohol all together. Alcohol doesn’t offer anything you can’t gain from a healthy Primal Blueprint diet, and you won’t have extra calories standing in the way of fat burning. At the heart of the alcohol question, however, is a principle we often invoke: wise selectivity. In other words, not all drinks are created equal. Number junkies can check out the USDA’s breakdown of alcoholic beverages and brands (PDF) or scan a quick snapshot poster (PDF) put together by the Consumer Federation of American some years ago. It highlights several of the highest selling varieties and gives both calories and carb counts. For our part, however, we thought we’d serve up our own PB- inspired alcohol hierarchy to assist you in the art of Primal indulgence. Top Shelf. Red Wine. We’re not talking specially colored labels or price tags here of course. We mean the biggest health benefit with the fewest carbs and additives. The pinnacle, not surprisingly, is red wine. Research has supported time and again the impressive polyphenol power of red wine. Another bonus with red? Resveratrol – that super antioxidant, able to combat cancer and reduce signs of aging, among other feats. Any red (other than port) offers high antioxidant power with somewhere around 3- 5 grams of carbs, however differences exist even in this top tier of Primal imbibing. Research has demonstrated that organic red wine boasts higher antioxidant and resveratrol content as well as lower OTA mycotoxin contamination (a common red wine contaminant defined by the European Scientific Committee for Food as “having carcinogenic, nephrotoxic, teratogenic, immunotoxic, and probably neurotoxic effects.”). The same research showed that basic table wine had less antioxidant power than Controlled Denomination of Origin brands. In terms of USDA ORAC value research (PDF), Cabernet trumped red table varieties (5. Go for richer, higher quality reds, and seek out organic if you can. Respectable Middling Choices. Wood Aged Spirits (particularly Whiskey, Brandy, Scotch and Cognac)An underappreciated class, we’d say. Unflavored distilled spirits in general are a low- carbers dream. What could be better than zero carbs? Well, how about zero carbs with a kick of antioxidants? Research has found impressive antioxidant activity in Bourbon whiskey, Armagnac brandy and cognac. The research has been less clear about the health benefits of other wood aged spirits, including dark rum and 1. Hard cider offers an impressive and healthy antioxidant boost, but the carbs typically measure around 1. As good as hard cider is, we’d suggest skipping the Strongbow and eating a heftier salad. Regular Beer. As mentioned, beer offers an antioxidant boost, but at 1. The calorie and carb count for beer can often be deceiving. Darker and heavier doesn’t always equate to more calories and carbs, and vice versa. It might be worth looking up if you aren’t sure.)Creamy/Dark/Stout or Rich Microbrew Beer. We know it’s tasty (especially a good microbrew), but those 1. Sugar Swill. All right – this is admittedly the fun one, but did anyone really expect us to promote the likes of Jello shots and mudslides? Let’s see what else we can add here: hard lemonade, packaged or otherwise sweetened hard liquor drinks like Smirnoff Ice, Fuzzy Navels, etc. And the liqueurs: Amaretto, Grand Marnier, Irish cream drinks, Kahlua (sorry Lebowski fans), Frangelico. You could be looking at at least 1. The labels say it all: high fructose corn syrup, colorants and all manner of preservatives and stabilizers. Keep it simple, and drink straight up. If you need water, go for a light tasting mineral water, seltzer or club soda. However Primally compatible any beverage might be, we don’t intend this as an endorsement to drink on a regular basis. As mentioned, a good diet can offer the same nutritional benefits and then some. You aren’t missing out if you choose to abstain, and we’d recommend it, in fact, if you’re in weight loss mode. For an otherwise healthy individual, red wine or – more occasionally – other low carb drink choices can certainly fit into the Primal 8. If you'd like to add. Signs & Symptoms of Lung Cancer. What are the early symptoms of lung cancer—the first signs that will tell you something is wrong? This is an important question for everyone, whether you have ever smoked or not. Lung cancer is an equal opportunity disease. It occurs in non- smokers, it occurs in women almost as frequently as men, and it occurs in young adults. In fact, lung cancer is increasing in young, never- smoking women. Importance of Knowing the Symptoms of Lung Cancer. Even though lung cancer is so common—it's the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the United States—a recent study found that only a small percent of the population was familiar with the most common symptoms. And since there isn't a screening test for lung cancer available for everyone, understanding the signs is often the only way to find it as early as possible, before it has spread. We know that the survival rate from lung cancer is better the earlier it is caught. The five- year survival rate for people with early stage lung cancer is approximately 5. Unfortunately, nearly half of people are already in the advanced stages of lung cancer at the time of diagnosis. Lung cancer can cause symptoms in several ways. It can cause symptoms by growing and pressing on airways and structures in and near the lungs. It can cause general symptoms related to cancer growth, such as fatigue and weight loss. And it can cause symptoms when it spreads to other regions of the body, such as the bones or the brain. Common Signs and Symptoms of Lung Cancer. Roughly 9. 0 percent of people have symptoms at the time a lung cancer is diagnosed. The other 5 to 1. So why is the diagnosis often missed or delayed? In addition to a lack of public awareness of the common signs and symptoms, it's important to note that the early symptoms of lung cancer may be subtle or vague. Instead of noting disabling hoarseness, a person may simply notice that he is clearing his throat more often than usual. Instead of being alarmed by shortness of breath, another may simply think she is out of shape or a has gained a few pounds when she becomes winded walking up a flight of stairs. As you read through these signs and symptoms, place them in your memory, both for yourself and for your loved ones. It's not uncommon for people to see their doctor only after a loved one comments about one of these signs. Common symptoms may include: A Cough That Doesn’t Go Away. A persistent cough is the most common symptom of lung cancer. This cough may be dry or wet, frequent or infrequent, and occur at any time of the day. Many people dismiss a persistent cough, attributing it to something else. Perhaps it is allergies, a leftover cough following a cold, or dry air during the winter months. Or perhaps you think your cough is a normal smoker's cough. But a cough that lasts more than a few weeks can be a sign of something more serious. A chronic cough as an early symptom of lung cancer is even easier to miss if you have a condition that predisposes you to a cough, such as asthma, COPD, allergies, or gastroesophageal reflux. If you are experiencing a persistent cough, talk to your doctor. Lung cancer is only one of the causes of a persistent cough, but a very important one. While lung cancer is found in only 2 percent of people with a chronic cough, 5. Shortness of Breath With Activity. Another common early symptom of lung cancer is shortness of breath that is present only with activity. This can be overlooked and blamed on getting older, being out- of- shape, or perhaps due to those few extra pounds you've gained. If you notice that you are hesitant to take that hike, become winded with sexual activity, or blame the humidity for making it more difficult to breathe, make an appointment to talk to your doctor. Repeated Infections Such as Bronchitis and Pneumonia. It’s common for someone to discover that they have lung cancer after being treated for repeated episodes of bronchitis or pneumonia. If a tumor is located near an airway, it can cause an obstruction which predisposes you to these infections. If you have recurrent chest infections talk to your doctor, especially if you don't have other typical chest infection symptoms such as a fever. Repeated chest infections could be related to smoking, a condition such as COPD, but could also be an early symptom of lung cancer. Coughing up Blood. Coughing up blood—termed . While coughing up blood may sound dramatic, many people may notice only a small amount of blood- tinged sputum on a tissue. Hemoptysis is also a symptom which can become serious rapidly. Coughing up even 2 teaspoons of bloody sputum is considered a medical emergency. Shoulder and Arm Pain Tumors occurring in the upper portions of the lungs known as Pancoast tumors often lack . Instead, these tumors may cause pain in the shoulder (frequently severe), which radiates down the arm towards the pinky finger. Other symptoms of Pancoast syndrome may include weakness and tingling of the hands, and . In addition to lacking typical lung cancer symptoms, these tumors can be hard to detect on imaging studies and the diagnosis is often delayed. Chest Pain. Chest pain, which some people describe as . While the lungs themselves do not have pain fibers, the lung lining (the pleura), as well as structures surrounding the lungs, have nerve endings, and this pain may be felt as if it is coming from the lungs. Referred pain may also be felt in this region. Up to 5. 0 percent of people with lung cancer have some chest or shoulder pain at the time of diagnosis. Back Pain. Certainly, there are causes of back pain which are more common than lung cancer, but back pain is a relatively common first symptom of lung cancer. This may be caused by pressure from a tumor, irritation of nerve roots, spread to bones in the spine, or adrenal metastases—the adrenal glands are small organs set on top of the kidneys to which lung cancer commonly spreads. Back pain related to lung cancer often occurs in the mid to upper back, is present at rest as well as with activity, and tends to worsen at night and with a deep breath. Unexplained Weight Loss. Unintentional weight loss is defined as the loss of 5 percent of body weight, or more than 1. There are several ways in which cancer can cause weight loss, ranging from a loss of appetite to changes in metabolism related to a tumor. Weight loss occurs in 2. Less Common Signs and Symptoms of Lung Cancer. In addition to the symptoms mentioned above, there are several other symptoms that are not uncommonly associated with lung cancer. These can include: Hoarseness. Lung cancer can cause a hoarse voice in a few ways. Tumors in the chest can directly cause pressure on the vocal cords (larynx), but hoarseness in people with lung cancer is most commonly caused by pressure on a nerve leading to the voice box called the recurrent laryngeal nerve. A symptom of hoarseness—especially if it is persistent—needs to be evaluated thoroughly. Face and Neck Swelling. A complication of lung cancer called superior vena cava syndrome (SVC syndrome) may cause swelling of the face, neck, and arms, and well as dilated veins in the neck and chest. These symptoms can occur when tumors in the lungs press on the superior vena cava, the large blood vessel returning blood to the heart. Fatigue. It may seem like everyone experiences fatigue, but the fatigue that is sometimes associated with lung cancer is different. Some people describe this fatigue as . It is the kind of fatigue that isn't easily remedied with a good night of sleep or a good cup of coffee. Wheezing. There is a saying that goes, . Of note is that wheezing related to lung cancer tends not to be generalized as it is with asthma. In fact, people are often able to describe where the wheezing originates in their lungs (localized wheezing). Blood Clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism)Blood clots are unfortunately common in people with lung cancer, even at the time of diagnosis. Though cancer treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy are known to increase risk, these clots may occur even before lung cancer is diagnosed. Leg and calf pain and swelling are common symptoms of a deep vein thrombosis, with symptoms of chest pain (often sharp and sudden) along with shortness of breath occurring if these clots dislodge and travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolus.)Paraneoplastic Syndromes. Some lung cancers release hormone- like substances, which in turn can cause a unique group of symptoms. These symptoms, known as paraneoplastic syndromes occur in around 1. Two of the more common paraneoplastic syndromes include hypercalcemia, in which the tumors (most commonly squamous cell carcinoma) secrete a substance which raises blood calcium levels causing thirst, muscle weakness and confusion, and the syndrome of inappropriate ADH (SIADH) in which the tumors secrete a substance lowering the blood sodium level causing headaches, weakness, and memory loss. Symptoms of Lung Cancer Metastases. Lung cancer is frequently diagnosed after it has already spread to other regions of the body. The most common regions to which lung cancer spreads include the brain, the bones, the liver, and the adrenal glands. Some possible symptoms include headaches, weakness, or seizures (due to brain metastases), back pain (due to bone metastases), and upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting (due to liver metastases). Any Abnormal Symptoms or a General Decline in Health—Your 'Gut' Feeling. From knee pain to anemia, this list could go on describing many more symptoms which could mean lung cancer. But an important symptom that hasn't been granted a medical name is your intuition. Many people remark that prior to their diagnosis of lung cancer, they just weren't feeling right or were wondering if something was wrong. Heed that warning if your body declares it, and talk to your doctor. Symptoms of Lung Cancer in Non- Smokers and Women.
